Flaneur – Photographs by Francisco Macias O

Sauntering down the boulevards and back alleys of the city without objective, desire or prejudice, the Flaneur represents
a sense of curious alienation. At once, the Flaneur finds himself detached from and yet keenly in tune with his surroundings. He observes, detects, and reflects, seeking to make sense of the complex interaction between the city and its inhabitants, all the while remaining at a distance.
Over the years, cities and the people who inhabit them have become the subject of my curiosity as a photographer. Through these images, I bear witness to ways in which architecture becomes the urban backdrop for the choreography of passersby, their panache activating the built environment as they move through it. In these moments of playful observation lies proof that daring to step back from our surroundings can reveal how we shape our environment and how it shapes us.
