Space Needle Redux: Knute Berger And B.J. Bullert Eye The Needle

Knute Berger is the author of Space Needle: The Spirit of Seattle and B.J. Bullert is the producer of two short films, Space Needle:  A Hidden History and The Space Needle at 40.Together, Berger and Bullert offer singular and unique perspectives on the monument and share stories and experiences of a landmark that continues to be an icon for the city of Seattle. This program is being held in conjunction with the exhibit The Space Needle: A 21st Century View held in the 8th Floor Gallery @ Central, October 7-27, 2019.

Columnist, editor and author Knute Berger is Editor-at-Large for Crosscut and Seattle magazine. He was previously editor of Seattle Weekly, Eastsideweek and Washington magazine. He is the host of Mossback’s Northwest on KCTS9-TV. In 2011 he was appointed Writer-in-Residence of the Space Needle while he worked on its 50th anniversary history, Space Needle, Spirit of Seattle which tracks the Needle’s first half century from its conception.

B.J. Bullert has produced biographical portraits and documentaries including Space Needle:  A Hidden History, The Space Needle at 40, Chief Seattle and Fishermen’s Terminal Revisited. A graduate of West Seattle High School, she started at The Evergreen State College and later earned degrees at Boston University, Oxford University and the University of Washington.  In 2007, she joined the Core Faculty at Antioch in Seattle where she teaches courses about making media for social change.
