C895 Presents C-Trends: Top of the ’19 with JD Williams / Episode 003

What’s up everyone, JD Williams here, and this is episode 3, the final episode, of my podcast Top of the ‘19! I am a junior at Nathan Hale High School, in Seattle, and I work at the C895 Radio station, as a student. It’s been really cool to work here, and I will plan to do it whenever I can. If you’ve managed to miss the first two episodes, then please go check those out first, before you look at this one. But basically this short, 3-episode podcast is about my personal top 19 tracks of 2019, as well as my top 3 artists of 2019. So for this final episode, it will be songs 5-1 and artist number 1. So let’s wrap this up!

Number 5 is the Fedde Le Grand remix of “Bruised Not Broken” from Matoma, MNEK and Kiana Lede. the remix has only 360,000 streams on Spotify, while the original has over 17,000,000 streams. The remix was released on August 9th, 2019, and I heard it on C895.

Coming in at number 4 is “Heart Upon My Sleeve” from Avicii and Imagine Dragons. It currently has over 24,000,000 streams on Spotify and was released in June 2019, as part of Avicii’s final album Tim. I heard this track on a New EDM Music Playlist on Spotify, as I was looking for new music for C895. And this was one of them.

The bronze medal, number 3, goes to “Oblivion” from M83 and Suzanne Sundfør, released in 2013. I heard this song in the movie Oblivion, and after I looked up what it was. It has 34,000,000 streams on Spotify as of now.

In second place is “Let’s Go” from Calvin Harris and Ne-Yo. Released back in 2012, as part of Calvin Harris’ third studio album, 18 Months, and it has over 122,000,000 streams on Spotify. I can’t remember exactly where I heard it, but I think it was on YouTube somewhere.

But there can only be 1 number one, 1 first place, 1 gold medal. My number one track of 2019 is… “Nobody Else” from Axwell! It was released on November 30th, 2018, and currently has over 35,000,000 streams on Spotify. And where else could I have heard my number one song than at my number one radio station C895!

And for this final episode, I will also be sharing my number one artist of the year of 2019, which is… Imagine Dragons!

From 2010-2011, the group released their first 3 EPs, Imagine Dragons, Hell and Silence, and It’s Time. Then in 2012, the group released their single “It’s Time”, which hit number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Shortly after, they released their debut album Night Visions, which hit number 1 on Billboard Alternative and Rock Album charts, and was in the top 10 in a lot of countries. Notable entries from the album are “Demons”, “It’s Time”, “On Top Of The World”, and “Radioactive”, which reached number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs, Billboard Rock Songs, and Swedish singles chart and has smashed records by spending 87 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the biggest hit of 2013. Then, in 2015, the group released their second album Smoke + Mirrors, which hit number 1 in the US, UK and Canada. It contains notable tracks “I Bet My Life”, “Gold”, “Warriors”, and “I’m So Sorry.” in 2017, the band released their third album Evolve, which produced 3 chart-topping tracks: “Believer”, “Thunder”, and “Whatever It Takes”, which makes them the artist with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart. Then in 2018, Origins, their fourth studio album, was released. It contains singles “Natural”, “Bad Liar”, “Zero”, “Born To Be Yours”, and Machine.” Imagine Dragons also have the top three rock songs of the 2010s on the Billboard charts, “Believer”, “Thunder”, and “Radioactive.” Currently, the group consists of lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, lead guitarist Wayne Sermon, bass and pianist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman.

Well, that concludes Top of the ‘19. I’m JD Williams, and thanks for tuning in everyone. Take care!

C895 Presents C-Trends: Tech Talk with VPIP: Tech Wish

I’m Vpip, a student at KNHC, Nathan Hale High School’s radio station. As one of my projects, I recorded this podcast. With my fellow student Kaito, we broke down ten technologies that are close to impacting our futures. Besides fitting with the theme of my podcast series, this specific topic has a lot to do with our future. In this episode: Tech Wish, we included a variety of inventions that are on the verge of coming into existence as well as others that won’t be invented for another century.

One invention I found particularly interesting is the personal fabricator. Currently top of the line 3D printers are limited in their ability to create objects, but look at the progression of language translators, in just a few decades they have progressed from simple electronic dictionaries, to far as the ability for“text to speech.” Just think of the possibilities made by having a personal fabricator.

While the idea of speedy technological advancements sounds amazing, there will always be dangers. Without proper tests or safety checks, a hoverboard or exoskeleton could cause a huge health or safety risk. For example vaping wasn’t regulated when it was released to the population, many people loved the idea of a “healthier” e-cigarette; however the risks are still not fully known. We hope you enjoy episode 2 of Tech Talk on C895.

C895 Presents C-Trends: Top of the ’19 with JD Williams / Episode 002

Hey everyone, I’m JD Williams, and this, the second episode of Top of the ‘19, my first ever podcast! I am a student who works at the C895 radio station, and this I believe was my second year. It’s been really educational and enjoyable, so thank you C895. If you missed the first episode, then let me quickly explain what this podcast is about. Top of the ‘19 is a list of my top 19 tracks on 2019, and as an added bonus, my top 3 artists of the year. The first episode was songs 19-11 and artist 3. This episode will be songs 10-6 and my 2nd favorite artist. So without further ado, here we go!

Coming in at number 10 is “Time” from Hans Zimmer, which currently has 147,000,000 streams on Spotify. Released back in 2010, I heard this song in the movie Inception, and later found it on Spotify, and have loved it for years now.

Number 9 goes to “Low” from Flo Rida and T-Pain, which was released back in 2008, as part of Flo Rida’s first album Mail on Sunday. It current;y has over 330,000,000 streams on Spotify. I heard this song at a high school dance actually, which is kind of funny, and when I heard it I was like “Ok, I need to figure out what this is!”

In 8th place is “Fire & Gold” from Morgan Page, VIVID, Allé, and Damon Sharpe. Released on June 21st, 2019, it has 1,800,000 streams on Spotify. I heard this song on C895.

At number 7 is “Repeat After Me” from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren, and W&W. which was released back in January of 2019. It’s got over 36,000,000 streams on Spotify, and I heard this song not on C895, but on the Discover Weekly Playlist that Spotify makes for you.

And the last song for this second episode, number 6, is “Lonely For You” from Armin van Buuren and Bonnie McKee. It was released in early 2019, and currently has 3,800,000 streams on Spotify. I did hear this track on C895 Radio!

And remember, each episode I will be counting down my top 3 artists of the year as well. And at number 2 is… Alan Walker!

Born Alan Olav Walker on August 24th, 1997, in Northampton, England. He was born with dual citizenship, to England and Norway. He first got interested in music production by watching tutorials on YouTube, and teaching himself. In 2012 Walker reached out to DJ Ness, to figure out how he produced his music. So he started music production on FL Studio, and released his music on his YouTube and Soundcloud pages. In 2014, released his first single, “Fade”, via the label NoCopyrightSounds. It did pretty well, but his remastered vocal version, “Faded”, released in 2015, topped the charts in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden, and topped the iTunes charts in 33 countries, and was in Spotify’s top 10. This song got him international attention. In 2016, he attended the Echo Awards, and teamed up with Zara Larsson. He also released singles “Single Me To Sleep” and “Alone” that same year. In 2017, his YouTube channel had blown up, having over 4.5 million subscribers, the most of any Norwegian YouTuber at the time. Between then and the release of his first studio album, Different World, he released many singles, notably “The Spectre”, “All Falls Down” with Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals, “Darkside” with Au/ra and Tomine Harket, “Diamond Heart” with Sophia Somanjo, and “Different World” with K-391, Sofia Carson, and CORSAK. All the previously mentioned are also featured on the album. In 2019, Walker teamed up with PUBG to produce “On My Way” with Sabrina Carpenter and Farruko, and “Live Fast” with A$AP Rocky. Since then he’s released a couple other singles.

Well, that’s all for episode number 2 of Top of the ‘19. I’m JD Williams, and I’ll be back with the final episode soon. Take care!

C895 Presents C-Trends: Tech Talk with VPIP: Movie Tech

I’m Vpip, a student here at Nathan Hale High School’s radio station C895. For one of my projects, I recorded and edited this podcast. With the help of my fellow student Kaito we broke down the top ten fictional technologies that appeared in movies. From grappling guns to holograms, all awesome technology has downsides. I chose this topic because I wanted to talk about something fun, but also informational. Introducing tech you may not know about, to things that may come to exist in our lifetime.

It may seem like handheld universal translators or jetpacks are centuries away, but in reality they may exist within decades. While you may not think a jetpack poses a serious threat, a technological change from cars to jetpacks causes huge problems for global security and other unforeseen threats. There is no way to predict just how dangerous theses currently fictional technologies will be. Ian Constance, Chief Executive of the Advanced Propulsion Centre said: “At present, the idea of a flying car is very much a rich man’s toy and will be built in tiny numbers. I think the real future of this type of vehicle lies in pay-per-use as a taxi and that means testing methods will have to account for both road and air use. That brings many conflicts as it requires a large amount of energy to get a vehicle airborne.”Many of the challenges in automotive and aeronautical engineering are the same: reduction of weight and increased efficiency. However, advanced drones are proving to be a good solution for many looking at the flying car market, such as companies like Uber and Boeing.

An example of unpredicted technological advancement is the cell phone. Just thirty years ago the average person thought of a handheld touch screen as near impossible, but now almost everyone relies on one for daily use. I hope you enjoy the podcast, as we break down the top ten movie technologies!

C895 Presents C-Trends: Top of the ’19 with JD Williams / Episode 001

What’s up everyone, I’m JD Williams and this the first episode of my podcast Top of the ‘19! For those of you who don’t know, I am a student here at Nathan Hale, and I work at the C895 radio station. I have been working here for nearly two years now, and it has really helped me to grow as a teenager, and it’s been a huge boost in confidence. So thank you to everyone at C895. You changed my life; this is something I will never forget. In this three-episode podcast, I am going to share my personal top 19 tracks of the year, as well as who my top 3 artists of the year are. In this debut episode, it’ll be songs 19-11 and my 3rd favorite artist. So let’s dive right in!

Coming in at number 19 is “Calling Home” from The Catacombs. This track was released on January 10th, 2019, and has around 26,000 streams on Spotify. I discovered this song on a New EDM Music playlist on Spotify, as I was looking for new music for C895 to play. This did not make the cut for C895, but I still really like it!

Number 18 is Elephante and Anjulie’s “The In Between”, which has 6,600,000 streams on Spotify. It was released as part of Elephante’s sophomore album Glass Mansion, in June of 2018. I heard this epic track on C895, where I “work”, and loved it. I also got to meet him in person, which was really cool.

At number 17 is the MOTi remix of Elephante and Nevve’s track “Otherside”, released in 2018. The remix only has 810,000 streams on Spotify, while the original’s got  4,700,000 streams. I heard this remix on C895, as I have many others.

The 16th spot is “Wait Another Day” from Mike Williams and Mesto. On Spotify, it has nearly 30,000,000 streams and was released via Spinnin Records on December 7th, 2018. Again, heard this banger on C895.

Number 15 is the collab by NOTD, Felix Jaehn, Captain Cuts, and Georgia Ku; “So Close”. It’s got 185,000,000 streams on Spotify and was released on November 2nd of 2018. Guess where I heard this song? C895!

Coming in at number 14 is “Neon Sky” from Feenixpawl and featuring Mikayla. Currently, it has 3,800,000 streams on Spotify and was released by Armada Music on the 4th of May, 2018. Heard this song on Seattle’s Home for Dance, C895!

At number 13 is Morgan Page’s remix of “Feel Alive” from DJ D-Sol and Katt Rockell. Released in January 2019, the remix has 290,000 streams on Spotify, while the original has 990,000 streams. I haven’t heard the original, but I heard the remix of C895.

12th place goes to “Don’t Tell Me” from Matisse & Sadko, Aspyer, and Matluck. Released by STMPD RCRDS on January 18th, 2019, it currently has over 14,000,000 streams on Spotify. This song does have explicit content, just a heads up. I did, therefore, not here this on C895, but on the Discover Weekly playlist that Spotify creates for you.

And number 11, the final song for this debut episode, is the collab between Digital Farm Animals, Shaun Frank, and Dragonette. It’s “Tokyo Nights”, and it was released back in March 2018. It’s got 17,000,000 streams on Spotify right now. And I heard this song on the marvelous KNHC, and KNHC HD-1 Seattle; C895!

So as I said, for each episode, I will be sharing one of my top 3 favorite artists of the past year. And this episode is my number 3 artist, which is… Calvin Harris!

Born Adam Richard Wiles on January 17th, 1984, in Dumfries, Scotland. He got into electronic music at a young age, and after high school, he stocked shelves in supermarkets to help pay for his DJ equipment. He got noticed when he posted his music to his Myspace page, and this led to his first record deal. In 2007, he released his debut album, I Created Disco, which hit number 8 on the UK Albums Chart, and number 19 on the US Top Electronic Albums. All of the tracks on the album were written, produced, and voiced by Harris. Notable singles in the album are “Acceptable in the 80s”, “The Girls”, and “Merrymaking at My Place.” Then in 2008, he collaborated with rapper Dizzee Rascal on “Dance wiv Me”, which hit number 1 in the UK, and was certified platinum by the BPI. Then, in 2009, he released his second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, which debuted at number 1 on the UK albums chart. Notable singles include “I’m Not Alone”, “Ready for the Weekend”, “Flashback” with Ayah Marar, and “You Used to Hold Me.” And over the next couple years he’d release a number of remixes. In 2011, Harris accompanied Rihanna on her Loud Tour. Later, in 2012, he released 18 Months, this third album, with notable singles “Bounce” in Kelis, “Feel So Close”, “We Found Love” with Rihanna, “Let’s Go” with Ne-Yo, and “Sweet Nothing” with Florence Welch. Harris made UK chart history by becoming the first artist to attain eight top-10 singles from one studio album, breaking the previous record set by Michael Jackson, but in 2017 was surpassed by Ed Sheeran. In 2014, Harris released this fourth studio album, Motion, with singles “Under Control” with Alesso and Hurts, “Summer”, “Blame” with John Newman, and “Outside” with Ellie Goudling. The following year, he collaborated with Disciples, to produce “How Deep Is Your Love”, which hit high on many charts. He then released “This Is What You Came For” with Rihanna in 2016, and throughout the year he released other singles, including his hit track “My Way.” In 2017, he released his fifth album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1, which features artists Ariana Grande, Young Thug, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Khalid, Schoolboy Q, DRAM, Nicki Minaj, Lili Yachty, Jessie Reyez, PartyNextDoor and Snoop Dog. In 2018, he released singles “One Kiss” with Dua Lipa, “Promises” with Sam Smith, and “I Found You” with benny blanco. Then in 2019 he released “Giant” with Rag‘n’Bone Man, and announced his sixth upcoming studio album.

Anyway, that concludes the debut episode of Top of the ‘19. I’m JD Williams, and I’ll see you all next time. Take care!

K-Popcast with Molly & Lillian / Episode: 001

The Korean wave — What is it? The best definition Google provides is “the global popularity of South Korea’s cultural economy exporting pop culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas and movies.” Of course when most young people think of the Korean Wave, they think of K-pop.

I always found it interesting how negatively K-pop is viewed in the west. I often hear people (especially guys) throwing around words like “gay” to describe K-pop because the korean male idols they see wear makeup and dress better than they do. K-pop fans also end up with negative connotations like being immature children, disrespecting K-pop idols personal lives as well as the Korean culture in general, and just being overall cringey.

I love talking to my parents about K-pop because I find it fascinating to hear the assumptions that society has put into their heads. I also find it fascinating how much of this just seems like basic knowledge that I think about every day, whereas this is a completely different world to them. I’ll explain to them how much fans have to do when their favorite group drops a new album – stream the album and the title track on as many music platforms as they can, break a record on YouTube, pre-order/buy the album, etc. and they are always blown away by what a fandom (which is often a group of teenagers) can do.

If I had a dollar every time I heard “Why do you listen to music you don’t understand?” or “They look like girls haha,” or “K-pop is gay” or “They’re not even talented,” I’d probably have seen BTS in concert a couple times and would need another shelf for my albums. Since I started using social media, I’ve noticed how fast people are to make assumptions about something they know nothing about.

I got into K-pop around January of 2018 when BTS was blowing up in the U.S. Before that, I was just as confused and critical as those around me. I thought it was so weird that people listened to music they didn’t understand and the treatment of women in the industry made and still continues to make me uncomfortable. I even actively disliked BTS’ song DNA that was blowing up in the U.S. at the time. Then one fateful day I wondered if watching a performance would help me understand, so I watched their U.S. TV debut on the AMAs in 2017. And then I watched it three more times.

In my humble opinion, K-pop can be fascinating and really cool if you have an open mind. I decided to create this podcast for those who are curious about the craze and want to learn more. My friend Lillian and I talk about dancing, the industry, fans, and more! If you still dislike it after doing research, that’s cool! The main thing is not putting other people down for their interests. Happy listening!

C895 Presents C-Trends: Magic The Discovering with JD Williams/ Episode 001

For C895’s C-Trends, I’m JD Williams, and this is a blog post about my new podcast, Magic: The Discovering. It is a podcast dedicated to the fantasy-themed collectable card game Magic: The Gathering, which is by far more popular than (and is the predecessor to) Pokemon. Magic: The Gathering is also known as MTG or just Magic. Magic was created in 1993 by Richard Garfield, and he now owns Wizards of the Coast, the company that created Magic, as well as Dungeons and Dragons, and they had a hand in Pokemon. And their Headquarters is right here, in Seattle. How cool is that?

According to Garfield, in an interview for the documentary Enter The Battlefield, he stated “I think it was back in ‘91, I had this eureka moment, when I was hiking at multnomah falls with my family. And I was at the falls and I had this idea that just overwhelmed me, that you didn’t have to have all the players have the same cards. And that struck me as having a lot of different game potential.” And he was so right. Magic now has well over 14,000 unique card printings, as of the films release in March of 2016. It has, by my manual count, 195 expansions, or sets. And so about 8 or so of those sets come out every year.

And while these numbers are impressive, what’s more impressive is the number, and type of people that play Magic. Magic is played all around the world, on every continent, in nearly every country, and you can’t just put us into one box of “Magic players”. Many celebrities that you may know play Magic: The Gathering, such as Cassius Marsh (defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks), Nathan Fillion (from Firefly, Castle, The Rookie), Seth Rogen (Saturday Night Live), and many more! And these people, while all famous, are famous for different reasons, and that just goes to show that you can’t put all us Magic players in one box; on label. We come from all regions, all races, all religions, all backgrounds…Magic is just a fun “hobby”, although for some it has become their career.

Many people collaborate, as to improve upon gameplay and the experience. However, some people who collaborate regularly call themselves teams. There are many famous Magic teams, such as ChannelFireball, Musashi, Ultra PRO, Greater Good, etc. All these teams play professional Magic, and get paid to do so. Many of these teams also have their own websites and stores, to generate more income and keep their careers afloat. That being said, if you want to start getting into Magic, the world’s most famous and premium place for all things Magic is Card Kingdom, also located in Seattle. Imagine that the world’s two best places for Magic, in the same city, our city! So cool!

Card Kingdom sells and buys Magic cards, as well as many many many MANY other games! They also host Magic tournaments with prizes, and would totally be happy and willing to teach you, and your friends, how to play Magic: The Gathering! But before you do that, go listen to my podcast covering the very basics of the game, so when you walk into Card Kingdom, or your local game store, you’ll not be completely lost.
